After\na year under Nazi occupation\, she escaped to the Belgian Congo. She received her M.S. in Urban Planning from Columbia\nUniversity\, M.A. and PhD in Sociology from New York University. In addition to chairing the Sociology department at Bard\,\nSuzanne co-founded the Women's Studies Program and directed it for eight years. She has held visiting positions at Vassar College\,\nat the University of Haifa\, and as Fulbright Senior Specialist at the Buber Institute/Free University of Brussels.\n\nTeaching Holocaust studies for many years\, she gives high school teachers workshops under the auspices of Facing History and\nOurselves\, and lectured at the NYC Museum of Jewish Heritage. Her book Hidden Children of the Holocaust: Belgian Nuns and\nTheir Daring Rescue of Young Jews from the Nazis was published by Oxford University Press. Her other publications are essays on\ncollective memory\, nostalgia and commemoration\, identities of Jewish-American women and Hannah Arendt's Jewish identity.
